A BMX bicycle is a type of bicycle that is used for extreme racing
on a motocross style track. These tracks usually feature an inline start, and have several obstacles such as jumps
that make the track harder to navigate.
The sport was born in California in the early 1970s, as motocross became hugely
popular. In essence, BMX was developed when kids began racing their bicycles on dirt tracks, much like their
motocross icons did on motorcycles.
By the time the mid 1970s came along, the sport had reached a
critical mass, and had a big enough following that bicycle manufacturers began to take notice and started building
bikes that were especially made for BMX riding.
Nowadays, BMX bike riding is as popular as ever. BMX bikes
themselves are light weight, sturdy, and are designed with the stability in mind to hold up while undergoing
stressful tricks and stunts.
Freestyle BMX is a staple event of the summer X Games extreme
sports competition, and has dramatically increased in popularity, mostly due to the easy accessibility of the
sport. It is a sport that can be taken up by pretty much anyone in any part of the world, which is why BMX bikes
have become so widespread and popular.
BMX bikes are more useful for performing BMX tricks than they are
at other things. For example, they are not really ideal for road racing, as they often lack the gear ratios to
acquire a high speed on the pavement. They are more suited to the rough, rugged terrain of a BMX track, or to the
half-pipes of a free-style course. BMX bikes can be bought online, or at a number of different retailers all
over the world.
