A recumbent bicycle is a type of bicycle that is designed
so that your feet pedal in front of you, not underneath you. On this type of bike, you actually sit back and
steer with controls that are located above or in front of you.
Recumbent bicycles, including the Triton Pro and Mobo models, are very popular for many reasons. For one, they are considered by some
people to be a lot more comfortable.
While in the sitting position on a recumbent bicycle, your weight
is distributed evenly over several square feet, as opposed to being spread over a few inches on a regular
bicycle.
Recumbent bicycles also offer a more aerodynamic design than
traditional road bicycles. For this reason, they can
achieve much higher speeds than even traditionally built racing bikes.
The highest speeds set on a bicycle to-date have been set on
recumbent bikes, and they were even banned from racing on a professional level in 1934, according to a Wikipedia
article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recumbent_bicycle.
Recumbent bikes are used for all kinds of different biking styles.
There are recumbent bikes that are made for touring, recumbent bikes that are made for road riding, recumbent bikes
made for off-road riding as well. There are even two-seated recumbent bicycles that allow for more than one
operator. Some recumbent bikes are front wheel drive, though most of them are rear-wheel-drive, just like
traditionally designed bicycles.
Recumbent bicycles date back to the days of the very earliest
bicycles. Back before bikes were very popular, a lot of different styles were experimented with, including the
recumbent style. These bikes showed up in the 1860s, and there was even a recumbent featured on the front of a
magazine in 1893. Their ease of use and aerodynamic style have both helped them to achieve a fair measure of
popularity among modern riders. While they might take some getting used to, they are pretty easy to operate, as
discussed in the video above.
